Live stand-up comedy will get a permanent home again in downtown Kalamazoo by the end of the month thanks to a couple from Chicago.
Mike Kott and Patti Shipanik plan to open The Laughing Post Comedy Club on January 26 in the lower level of 241 E. Kalamazoo Ave., in the space beneath Shakespeare’s Pub that was formerly occupied by Gary Fields’ Comedy Club. That club opened in 2005 but closed abruptly in June.
Shipanik, who will be moving to the Kalamazoo area from Chicago, said comedy lovers can expect to see recognizable talent at her club, including comedians appearing on HBO, BET, Showtime, NBC’s Last Comic Standing and the late-night-show circuits. Shipanik has been the general manager of Chicago’s family-owned Riddles Comedy Club for the past 18 years. Her brother owned the business for the first 15 years before selling it to her son three years ago.
The Laughing Post will have comedy shows at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Alcohol will be served and admission will be $12.
