Sean Kent: Waiting for the Rapture
Rating: 2 stars (out of 5)
By Ryan P. Carey
Sean Kent’s social commentary gets a bit weary on “Here’s how stupid things are these days.” One of the unspoken skills of modern comics is to rant without coming off like some sort of young grandpa. His topics are basically “Here’s how terrible Walmart is…,” “Here’s how stupid Facebook is…,” “Don’t you hate rednecks,” “Republicans are evil” and “Dick Jokes” (or, “vagina jokes”, as it were). On Waiting for the Rapture, he comes off as a Bill Hicks-Dane Cook hybrid, but much shorter on funny. (And on YouTube he comes off as a material-needy Greg Fitzsimmons).
Kent’s act is his “opinionated guy at the bar” personality, and he’d certainly be amusing in that context. But his state-the-obvious material doesn’t live up to his big-picture ideals.
For the less discriminating comedy fan, I should point out that Waiting for the Rapture isn’t terrible. He’s polished, has a consistent point of view, nails his timing and generally has an entertaining personality, but for comedy fanatics, there’s really nothing here incredibly original, inspired, or funny to make it worth picking up on Amazon.
