Comic Tip: How to Work the Check Spot

“Come up with some of your own check jokes. It’s a good time to really work your craft. I try to bang out really strong jokes in the beginning to win the crowd over. But, I’ll talk about that I’m not doing my best jokes until you guys pay the checks. Just be relaxed and try to find the right jokes. I think one-liners are good. Story jokes are a waste because people will look up, look down and they lost you.

Do quick jokes and try to find the people who are paying attention. I always let the people know that the checks are out and that’s why no one is listening because if someone in the front row isn’t hearing laughs, they’re going to think maybe he’s not funny. They might not figure out it’s because of the checks. Make sure you have some bangers right when you know everyone is paying attention again.” – Jason Andors, Comedian
